Vancouver and Los Angeles are often linked when it comes to discussions about transportation.  In the 1950’s, both cities had vibrant street car systems that were the backbone of the local transportation network.  Then, the two cities took different paths.

Today, Los Angeles is the car culture capital of the world, even if it now appears the city is beginning to shake its oil addiction.  Vancouver is a dense city with a thriving electric trolley car system, dense development patterns, walkable communities all connected through a well-used light rail system.

This weekend, Los Angeles closes the gap a little with CicLAvia.  Vancouver’s Car-Free festival occurred with four large block parties.  Los Angeles’ will have 7.5 miles of open streets.  Maybe this time Los Angeles can show Vancouver how it’s done.
