El Mercardo del Pueblo, or the neighborhood market, opened Saturday after months of work securing a path for street vendors to vend legally. East Los Angeles Community Corporation organizers helped street vendors get permits, certificates, and undergo inspections in order to sell at the market, which was located at Hollenbeck Middle School.

Street vendors lined half of the market selling Mexican street food including tortas, huaraches, crepes, and churros, while the other side sold household items and clothing. While the event was festive, with live music and food, the market is also considered a farmers market. Yet, there were only  two sole produce vendors. One bought his products from downtown markets.
