South LA Kids Bicycle Festival

South Los Angeles – To encourage safe, healthy, active lifestyles among children in South Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC), employees of the University of Southern California (USC), and Walk ‘ Rollers are partnering to host a free kids bicycle festival, Sunday, April 13 at the Foshay Learning Center in South Los Angeles. The family-friendly event starts at 11:00 a.m. and is designed for children ages 5-12.

The goal of the event is to encourage children to safely ride their bicycles more often. The Festival’s focus is a series of skills stations that the children progress through as they master various bicycle handling skills. Instructor-lead group rides in the surrounding neighborhood allow children to put into practice the skills they learned on the course.

Other activities include helmet donations from LAPD South Traffic Division, bicycle tuneups courtesy of El Maestro Bicycle Shop, a bicycle raffle and a bicycle craft and activity area. Children are encouraged to bring their own bikes although there will be a limited supply of bikes and helmets for those without. Helmets are required for all riders.

This event is made possible by the USC Good Neighbors Campaign, an employee-giving program that supports university-community partnerships. The grant was awarded to LACBC in the summer of 2013 to train instructors and to foster educational events and community bike rides. In addition to the April Bike Festival, the project has also included a Kids Bike Festival in November 2013 that attracted nearly 100 children and their families.

LACBC is a non-profit, member-based advocacy group that works to make L.A. County communities healthy, safe, and fun places to ride a bike.

Walk ‘n Rollers is a non-profit based in Los Angeles that works with schools and communities throughout LA County to encourage more walking and biking to school.
