There are brand new bike lanes on Figueroa Street. Despite all the ruckus, LADOT went ahead and removed one travel lane, making room for new bike lanes…

…in Wilmington!

That’s South Figueroa Street, of course. Very convenient for accessing L.A. Harbor College.

The new South Figueroa Street bike lanes currently run 0.9 miles from Mauretania Street to F Street. According to the Department of Transportation (LADOT) website, they are planned to extend 2.0 miles from Lomita Boulevard to Harry Bridges Boulevard. Wilmington appears to be on course to have one of the best bike lane networks in the entire state of California, but that is another story for later.

There are actually quite a few stretches of bike lanes on Figueroa Street. According to LADOT, there are lanes from Redondo Beach Boulevard to 190th Street, from El Segundo Boulevard to Rosecrans Avenue, and from Wilshire Boulevard to Cesar Chavez Avenue. And more coming fairly soon when MyFigueroa extends from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to 7th Street.

Maybe they will all join up someday. Maybe these safety improvements will make it into Northeast Los Angeles, too, someday.
