The Week in Livable Streets Events

sblog_calendarWith the L.A. City Council out of session, Metro meetings not until next week, Operation Firefly shuttered until the fall; it’s kind of a light week. Don’t miss Tour de Watts this weekend and a big Bike the Vote meeting on Monday.

Wednesday – UCLA’s Green Building Symposium hosts Matt Peterson, the city’s sustainability officer, to discuss how one can make their building more green and more resilient. Read more, here.

Wednesday – Santa Monica Next sponsors a light reception with drinks and snacks and a team in town from Gehl Architects. New urbanism and a happy-hour style event. Get the details, here.

Saturday – During a panel at USC two weeks ago, Los Ryderz’ founder J.P. Partida spoke of the importance of giving youth in South L.A. a safe outlet for recreation in their own community. The Tour de Watts — Los Ryderz’ biggest event of the year — makes good on that mission by taking participants on a tour through some of the sites that have served as Watts’ greatest challenges and its most uplifting sources of hope. Get more details, here. If riding a bike is not your thing, join the Safe Passages Peace March later that morning and wave at the cyclists when they roll by. Details, here.

Saturday – Celebrate Women’s History Month by participating in this women-only basic bicycling skills workshop! Women-identified folks are invited to participate in a 2-hour workshop which will offer basic information about how to safely navigate the streets of L.A. County. Taught by League Cycling Instructor and LACBC member Molly Arevalo, the workshop includes a booklet and LACBC materials you can take home. Details, here.

Next Monday – If you ride a bicycle and you care about who wins the race in Council District 4 — the race to replace Tom LaBonge — you should plan on attending this meeting. Get the details, here or on Facebook.
