Last night, before a standing room only crowd, the Mar Vista Community Council voted to keep in place recent Venice Boulevard safety improvements, including protected bike lanes and a road diet.
In many historically marginalized urban neighborhoods, decades of disenfranchisement and the repressive policing that accompanied it created great insecurity in the public space and, over time, eroded bonds of social trust between neighbors. With the public space essentially rendered off limits for too many, community had to be nurtured in private spaces.
Irate drivers calling themselves "Open Streets PDR" are working to undo recent safety improvements in Playa Del Rey. Councilmember Bonin has responded that "We should never buy into the notion that convenience is worth endangering lives."
