Fighting Transit Segregation

The BRU is initiating a People’s Public Hearing on August 20th on the state of the bus system. If you have something to say about the bus service cuts, this is your chance. Public officials have also been invited to hear your stories.

On June 26th, close to 305,000 hours of bus service were eliminated by MTA–the biggest cuts since the end of the Civil Rights Consent Decree mandated by the federal government. Over the last 5 years, we’re seen MTA aggressively reverse the bus improvements won in the last 15 years of struggle by the BUS RIDERS UNION. With 2 fare increases and close to a million hours of bus service cuts, MTA intends on taking us back to the early 90s, when riders endured long waits and overcrowded buses to get to school, work and health centers.

More than ever we need you to join the Bus Riders Union and put the pressure on the MTA and the federal government to restore and stop bus service cuts. Last year in our fight to stop bus service cuts, the BRU submitted a complaint, to the federal government charging discrimination. In part because of our complaint the Federal Transit Administration is conduction a comprehensive civil rights review of MTA. WE need to take advantage of this opportunity and turn up the heat for a thorough investigation. In order to ensure that the voices of Black, Brown, API and low-income bus riders are heard, the BRU is initiating a People’s Public Hearing on August 20th on the state of the bus system. If you have something to say about the bus service cuts, this is your chance. Public officials have also been invited to hear your stories.
