The Weekend in Livable Streets Events: Earth Day

My favorite Earth Day event of all-time was probably 2008's "Car Free Wilshire Boulevard."

Along with Park(ing) Day and CicLAvia, Earth Day has always been one of the best holidays on the Livable Streets Calendar.  Whether it’s going on a bike ride, or planting a tree, there are literally thousands of ways to make the world a greener, better place right in your local community.

It would be nigh impossible to catalog all the events happening throughout the city, but if you know of an event in your neighborhood, leave it in the comments section and we’ll move it into this post as a sort of impromptu Earth Day Calendar.

Sunday, April 22, 2012

Noon to 1:30 P.M. – Advocates are temporarily opening the Bundy Pocket Park detailed in our 2011 story “Open Space Behind Bars.”  This will be a rare chance to get into the pretty pocket park that has been locked shut for many years.  It is a start in the direction of getting the park reopened permanently.  Bring a snack  or lunch to the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Bundy Boulevard.

12:30 P.M. – Santa Monica opens the first “Bike Campus” in L.A. County, a great place to teach and learn road safety skills.  Gary Kavanagh has all the details in a story posted earlier today.

2:00 P.M. – The Los Angeles County Museum of Art screens the popular “Riding Bikes with the Dutch.”  The light-hearted documentary follows Long Beach’s Bauch family on an adventure to the Netherlands.  General museum admission is required although FREE museum admission will be granted to those with a bike helmet or bike parking receipts, or those who have traveled by alternative transportation. Bike Valet will be available near the 6th Street Entrance to the Museum.  Film maker Michael Bauch will be on hand for a Question and Answer Session afterwards.   Need more details?  Get them here.
