The weather may be slightly iffy (for once), but the community is gearing up to make South L.A. a healthier environment tonight.

First up, members of the South L.A. bike clubs will be gathering in the parking lot of the Bank of America at Broadway and Manchester at 6 p.m. tonight to show the rest of the city they are serious about cycling. All bikes and styles are welcome. The time for unity, writes organizer John Jones III of the East Side Riders, is now. For more information on the meeting, see their event page here. If you’re curious about what kinds of things the bike clubs are up to, check in with the East Side Riders, who are hoping to give folks transitioning from homelessness a bike tour of Watts this Saturday, Feb 1st, starting at the Watts Towers at 10 a.m.

Second, neighbors in the West Adams area will be gathering at LA84 to update the community on their fight to prevent Freeport-McMoRan from using acid, gravel packing, sand packing, or fracking to drill wells in their neighborhood. Since their big community gathering a few weeks ago, they’ve been active in documenting activity at the drill sites. They want to both hold Freeport to the temporary freeze on drilling Herb Wesson secured and to create a record of potential violations. Finally, if you’ve ever ridden your bike along Angeles Vista Blvd., you know it both moves through a lovely neighborhood and has some gorgeous views of the city. The Department of Public Works is looking to make it an even more pleasant ride by putting the boulevard on a road diet. They plan to stripe bike lanes and reconfigure the road to support two travels and a center turn lane.
